National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, 2006
During National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month, we renew our resolve in the fight against this devastating disease, and we take time to remember the loved ones taken from us by Alzheimer's. We also recognize the patients and family members who are affected by it, and we extend our gratitude to the caretakers and researchers who are pursuing better treatments and a cure.

NPR : Current Treatments for Alzheimer's Limited
Several drugs are currently FDA-approved to treat Alzheimer's disease. At best, these drugs lead to only modest improvements in the cognitive functions of patients; none can stop the destruction of brain cells that underlies the illness. Michele Norris surveys the current treatment landscape with Jerry Yesavage of Stanford University's Alzheimer's Disease Center.

Alzheimer's Disease - Conditions - Medbroadcast
Alzheimer's disease has a major impact on the health of Canadians. Over 300,000 Canadians suffer from some type of dementia (mental deterioration), and 60% of these have Alzheimer's disease. About 60% of people in long-term care facilities have Alzheimer's disease, and 1 in 5 Parkinson's disease patients will develop it. The US Alzheimer's Society estimates that about $90 billion is spent annually in medical and nursing home care, lost productivity, and early death due to Alzheimer's disease. By the year 2031, there will be over 750,000 Canadians with dementia, largely because the"baby boom" generation (people born between 1946 and 1960) will reach old age. We still don't understand exactly how Alzheimer's disease damages the brain. Somehow, cells are damaged and eventually die in different areas of the brain. The damaged areas of the brain contain abnormalities called "senile plaques" and "neurofibrillary tangles.
