Wandering and Alzheimer's Overview
Wandering is an important behavior common in Alzheimers disease that made the disease so critical to the field of search and rescue. Not only do Alzheimers patients wander but they also easily become lost. Normal adults (who often become lost also) rely upon three intact systems to know where they are in space. Short and long term memory to identify landmarks, a sense of time and speed to judge distance, and an intact visual-spatial sense to know direction angles and expected arrival times between landmarks. All three of these systems are impaired in the Alzheimers subject.

This site gives clear and understandable information about various medical conditions, their signs and effective treatment. Dr. Ray Schilling studied medicine in Germany, worked in cancer research at the prestigious Ontario Cancer Institute in Toronto/Ontario, and has several research publications to his credit. After 16 years of work in family medicine in British Columbia/Canada he has turned to occupational and industrial medicine. In his work with patients he puts emphasis not only on examination and treatment, but also on explaining medical conditions to patients and their families. This resulted in his medical website. Here the reader finds information in every day language about various medical conditions, describing the newest and most effective treatment options, explaining tests, and also covering topics like prevention. A multitude of links allows the reader to research topics of interest in more depth. A newsletter regarding up to date medical topics is also accessible free of charge at askdr.ray.com Individual medical questions can be answered at a nominal fee by logging on to askdr.ray.com Even though this site encourages a proactive approach, the reader is advised that it is no substitute for examination and treatment by a health professional.
